ACE-Defying Wellness Program℠

The ACE-Defying Wellness Program℠ is a 6-month program that was designed to help people who’ve experienced childhood adversity overcome the health concerns they’re at increased for, including mental health concerns, reproductive disorders, autoimmune disease, and metabolic syndrome-related concerns, so they can live their healthiest and best lives now, in spite of their difficult pasts.

Do you consider your childhood to have been chronically stressful? If so, you’re not alone. According to statistics, 40-60% of people have experienced chronic, toxic stress during childhood. This type of stress is referred to as adverse childhood experiences or ACEs.

ACEs can include:

  • parental divorce or separation;
  • violence between caregivers;
  • substance abuse within the home;
  • incarceration of a household member;
  • parental depression or mental illness;
  • physical, sexual, or emotional abuse;
  • physical or emotional neglect;
  • the death of parent(s) or sibling(s);
  • growing up in foster care;
  • and any other experience that causes undue stress during childhood.

When children experience ACEs, it causes abnormally high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Because their brains and bodies are still developing and are therefore vulnerable, children are more susceptible to the effects of cortisol than adults. In children, the elevated cortisol levels that come about as a result of childhood adversity actually rewire the chronic arm of the stress response (known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis). It resets the individual’s “normal” or “default setting” so that their baseline levels of this stress hormone are higher than they would have been had they not had a stressful childhood.

Childhood adversity can lead to other changes in the brain and body as well. This includes decreases in gray and white matter in the brain, and it also includes elevations in inflammation markers. This is why a stressful environment, particularly during childhood, is so damaging to the brain and body.

While some of the brain changes can be reversed by the child entering a more favorable environment, cortisol and inflammation levels in ACE survivors typically remain elevated, even into adulthood. High levels of cortisol can affect multiple organ systems, including the reproductive, immune, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. These high cortisol levels, in combination with elevations in inflammation markers, cause “wear and tear” on the body.

Through a variety of mechanisms, they increase our risk for mental health concerns, reproductive disorders, autoimmune disease, and metabolic syndrome-related concerns (cardiovascular disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity).

In fact, research demonstrates that ACE survivors are 76% more likely to be diagnosed with these types of chronic disease as adults and 4 times as likely to be diagnosed with PTSD in adulthood than people who did not experience childhood adversity.

But this doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

Through the ACE-Defying Wellness Program℠, we help people who have experienced ACEs address the changes that have taken place within their brains and bodies as a result of their traumatic pasts. We work in both individual and group settings with participants who have been diagnosed with various chronic conditions. Most approaches to wellness completely ignore trauma history. However, by addressing the underlying cause as well as our clients’ most pressing health concerns, we are able to help people like you defy their ACEs and live their healthiest and best lives now, in spite of their difficult pasts.

If you would like additional information about the ACE-Defying Wellness Program℠, give our office a call at (404) 532-9548.

Before your first appointment, you need to complete and submit your client agreement and your intake questionnaire. You will receive instructions via email as well as an invitation to the online portal where you will submit your questionnaire. If you have any questions regarding submission, please contact our office as soon as possible, as your questionnaire must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to your first appointment.

You can expect to spend 60 to 90 minutes discussing your health at the first appointment.

As a participant in one of our health programs, you have the option of having your appointments either in-person or via our secure telehealth platform. In preparation for your telehealth appointment, you should access the virtual waiting room at least ten minutes before your appointment time by visiting the link you received via email. Clicking this link will take you to the Focus Integrative Healthcare virtual waiting room, at which time you will be prompted to enter your name so that your doctor knows that you have checked into the waiting room. At your appointment time, your doctor will invite you to your secure video-conference appointment.

The telehealth platform functions optimally on Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers (laptop/desktop). Unfortunately, the platform does not currently work with the latest version of Android mobile devices. For this reason, we do not recommend using Android mobile devices for your telehealth appointments at this time.

If you experience technical difficulties when trying to connect for your appointment, you should call the office as soon as possible at (404) 532-9548. Once connected, we will try to assist you in connecting to the telehealth platform. If you are unable to connect or if you call after your appointment start time, we will proceed with your appointment via telephone.

At Focus Integrative Healthcare, we are committed to providing each of our clients with exceptional care. If you cancel without giving enough notice, you are preventing another individual from being seen during your scheduled appointment time. In order to ensure that we make the best use of our time and are able to provide the best care to our clients, we require 48 hours notice received during our normal business hours for canceled or rescheduled appointments. If you fail to notify us of a missed appointment 48 hours before your scheduled appointment time, you will be charged a $98 late cancellation fee. If you attempt to reschedule your appointment without giving 48 hours advance notice, you will be required to pay the $98 fee before your appointment can be rescheduled.
